Best Pompeii tours: 5 picks by situation and 18 selections

If you're already in Pompei, start with a guided walk at the gate. Staying elsewhere? Choose your departure town first. Check entry, time inside and group size before comparing prices.

  1. Choose where you start.
  2. Decide whether you want another site or a coast stop.
  3. Compare the ticket, time inside and group cap.

Every listed tour clears 4.5 stars and 30 reviews combined on Viator and Tripadvisor, 10 reviews on the Vesuvius page. We read the listings and compare them by exact option: which ticket, how many hours inside Pompeii, where you meet, what the day adds.

Entry included doesn't establish Villa of the Mysteries access; check the ticket type before booking. Planning to stay after the walk? Check the park's closing time and your return transport: you cannot leave and re-enter on the same ticket. The three Pompeii tickets.

What I'd do: choose a walk at the gate, then stay inside on the same park ticket if the tour's finish and my return transport allow it.

What people ask about Pompeii tours

Which Pompeii tour should I book?

Start with where you sleep. From Rome or Naples, take the matching day-trip selection. Already in Pompei, compare the guided walks by ticket, hours inside and group cap.

Want Vesuvius or Herculaneum the same day? Open the combined selections. Sleeping on the coast? Open tours from Positano and the Amalfi Coast; to visit a coast town as part of the day, open Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast and check the stops.

What I'd do: a 2-hour walk at the gate, then the rest of the day on my own ticket if the closing time and my train allow it.

Which is best for a first visit?

For a first visit, I'd choose a 2-hour walk with entry included and a cap of 15. Use the small-group selection to check the cap, then check the ticket column: entry isn't included on every walk.

In my experience 2 hours covers the Forum and the houses around it; add an hour each for the Villa of the Mysteries and the Amphitheatre.

Is the park ticket included?

Each selection says so per option. Where it is, check which ticket: the park's €20 ticket covers the ancient city, the €25 one adds the Villa of the Mysteries. Where it isn't, buy the named ticket on Vivaticket before you travel; see the three Pompeii tickets.

Can I visit Pompeii without a tour?

Yes. Buy a named park ticket. Take the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Villa dei Misteri for Porta Marina, then use the park's map.

Tours can arrange a guide, transport or entry. Check the option: some sell only the walk, and Pompeii Express leaves you to explore on your own.

See Pompeii without a guide and how long you need.

Rome or Naples: where should I start?

From Naples, you can take the Circumvesuviana yourself; the compared tour days take 3 to 9 hours.

From Rome it is 9 to 13 hours by train or coach for 2 to 5 hours inside. Both selections name the hours inside and the ticket; the Rome one says which days add Naples, Sorrento or the coast.

Which tours take children?

Most shared walks take children with their own fare band, printed on each tour page. Four walks are built for them, with games, a quiz or an exercise book, compared in tours with kids with the age bands, strollers and shade.
