How to get to Pompeii: the two train lines and the three gates
Two Circumvesuviana lines reach Pompeii, and they are not interchangeable. The Naples–Sorrento line stops at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, beside Porta Marina, and takes 36 minutes from Naples. The Naples–Poggiomarino line stops at Pompei Santuario by the Amphitheatre gate and takes 47. Scheduled departures from Napoli P. Garibaldi run until 22:03 for Scavi and 19:42 for Santuario.

- 34 trains a day from Naples to Pompei Scavi, usually every 30 minutes
- 36 minutes from Napoli P. Garibaldi, on every departure
- €3.30 for the EAV single from Naples, €4.30 for the integrated ticket good 140 minutes
- 3 gates, each with a ticket office: Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra, Piazza Anfiteatro
Where does the Circumvesuviana train run?
The Naples–Sorrento line traces the bay. Pompeii sits where it turns inland around the foot of Vesuvius, which is why the same train reaches Herculaneum, Pompeii and the peninsula.
Which station is Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri?
Two different places are called Pompei, and two different stations in Naples are called Garibaldi. Match the station name to the operator before you buy.
| You want | Operator | Name when you buy | Walk at the far end | Serves |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The excavations, west side | EAV Circumvesuviana | Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri | Beside the gate | Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra |
| The excavations, east side | EAV Circumvesuviana | Pompei Santuario | Short walk | Piazza Anfiteatro |
| The town station | Trenitalia | Pompei | Pompei Link bus to the park | The bus stop by the park |
| Leaving Naples on EAV | EAV Circumvesuviana | Napoli P. Garibaldi | Under Corso Lucci inside the Napoli Centrale complex | Both Pompeii lines |
| Leaving Naples on Trenitalia | Trenitalia | Napoli Piazza Garibaldi | A different station of a similar name | Regionale trains to Pompei |
On Trenitalia the combined train-and-bus product is also called Pompei Scavi: you pick it as your destination and the €1.60 bus quota is added to the rail fare. EAV's station of that name is a different thing, on a different network.
Where are you starting from?
Choose your starting city. Each page carries that city's timetable, its fare and the day it makes.
34 trains a day on the Sorrento line, €3.30 on EAV, and a choice between the two gates.
Sorrento is the end of the line, so you board where the train starts. 34 departures a day at €2.80, with Herculaneum and Vesuvius on the same route.
Trenitalia advertises a direct Frecciarossa to Pompei on Sundays. Any other day it is high speed to Naples and a change.
Which gate to use, where each one puts you and what is open today are on the map; the three park tickets are set out separately.
Which line goes to which gate?
Both lines start at Napoli Porta Nolana and call at Napoli P. Garibaldi, EAV's own stop on the Circumvesuviana level of the Napoli Centrale complex. The difference starts after that.
| Line | Stop | Gate it serves | Journey | Trains a day | First out | Last out | Last back to Naples |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naples–Sorrento | Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri | Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra | 36 min | 34 | 5:33 | 22:03 | 22:35, in at 23:13 |
| Naples–Poggiomarino | Pompei Santuario | Piazza Anfiteatro | 47 min | 29 | 5:42 | 19:42 | 20:06, in at 20:54 |
| Trenitalia Naples–Salerno | Pompei | The park bus stop; check the walk to your chosen gate | Bus adds about 15 min | Not counted here | — | — | Last bus from the park 17:50 |
Scheduled times, counted by us from EAV's printed timetables: only trains that call at the named stop, matched by train number between the two rows. The Naples–Sorrento timetable is the one in force from October 17, 2026. The 15 minutes for the Pompei Link is the park's own description, and its last bus back from the park at 17:50 is earlier than the park's summer closing at 19:00.
Does the gate really matter?
It decides your walk and your last train. Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra are beside the Villa dei Misteri station, so the Naples–Sorrento line puts you at the gate. Piazza Anfiteatro is at the other end of the site, near Pompei Santuario, and the line that serves it runs 29 times a day against 34, with the last scheduled departure from Naples at 19:42 rather than 22:03.
If you only want the shortest trip, take the Sorrento line and enter at Porta Marina. If you want to start at the Amphitheatre and walk west, the Poggiomarino line saves you the length of the site on foot, at the cost of 47 minutes on the train and an earlier last train. Which gate suits which plan is on our map of the gates and stations.
What does a ticket cost?
These are the fares the Campania fare calculator returns for a trip to Pompei, by zone. The Circumvesuviana is EAV, so the EAV price is the one you pay at the window.
| From | Zone | EAV single | Other operators' single | Integrated | Integrated is valid |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naples | NA3 | €3.30 | €3.50 | €4.30 | 140 min |
| Sorrento | AC3 | €2.80 | €3.00 | €3.70 | 100 min |
| Herculaneum | AC2 | €2.40 | €2.50 | €3.00 | 80 min |
| Salerno | AC3 | €2.80 | €3.00 | €3.70 | 100 min |
The integrated ticket covers one interurban journey inside its fare zone, with the local connections the zone allows, counted from first validation. It is not a return ticket and not a network pass. Campania raised single, hourly and urban daily fares on October 1, 2026, by regional decree 55 of July 3, 2026, following the ISTAT index; the same notice says ANM and EAV left their own company fares unchanged, which is why the EAV column is lower.
Where can I buy Circumvesuviana train tickets?
Four things you might buy, and only one of them is the park. Nothing here goes through us.
Named tickets on the park's own ticketing site: €20 city, €25 with the Villa of the Mysteries, €30 for the three-day Plus. The gate wants the ticket and your ID, and there is no re-entry.
EAV lists three ways to pay: a QR-code paper ticket at the station window under its new sales system, the GoEav app on your phone, and Tap&Go with a contactless card at enabled turnstiles on its rail lines.
Trenitalia sells the bus leg with the rail journey: pick Pompei Scavi as your destination and €1.60 is added to the fare. Fifteen runs each way, 08:45 to 17:40 from the station and 08:55 to 17:50 back from the park.
From €65 per adult across the compared departures from Naples, Rome and Sorrento. What the price covers differs by option, which is what our selections compare.
Is the Campania Express running?
The Campania Express was the reserved-seat tourist train between Naples, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Sorrento, at €15 one way. EAV's notice adds the refund route: for tickets bought from EAV use its complaints form, and for tickets bought through another seller ask that seller. Until it returns, the ordinary Circumvesuviana is the train to Pompeii, with no seat reservation.
