Pompeii tours from Rome: our selection

Our selection: 8 of the 66 Pompeii day trips from Rome listed on Viator. We read them all and kept the eight with the best reviews, ratings and what's actually in the price. Then we compared those eight by time inside Pompeii, trip length, park entry, other stops, group size and where you meet in Rome.

By Chiara Vitale · Updated September 19, 2026

Book Pompeii by coach for a 2-hour guided walk at the lowest price here. Choose the option without Vesuvius. Pick the winery train trip if lunch matters too.

Take Pompeii Express for about 5 hours inside, without a guide. For 3 guided hours, choose the archaeologist and coast trip. Expect a long drive with that one.

The park sells a €20 city ticket; €25 adds the Villa of the Mysteries. Six tours don't name their ticket. Count on the city, and choose Pompeii Express Plus if you want villa entry.

What I'd do: I'd take Pompeii Express and give the city those hours.

Pompeii from Rome with Optional Mt. Vesuvius & Pizza Lunch Option: Pompeii (without Vesuvius) · English

The Pompeii option without Vesuvius has the lowest starting price here. Entry and a 2-hour guided walk are included. You return to Rome by coach.

I'd book this if the price decides it. For more time inside Pompeii, choose Pompeii Express.

Lunch costs extra on the Pompeii-only option. For the crater, choose Pompei & Vesuvius Crater Hike; the Geologist Walk doesn't reach it.

  • 2 guided hours on six of them; 3 on one; about 5 on your own on Pompeii Express.
  • Only Pompeii Express Plus names the villa. If the villa matters, that option or your own €25 ticket.

What should I check before booking?

How much time will I have inside Pompeii?

Six trips include a 2-hour guided walk. The archaeologist and coast trip gives you 3 guided hours. Pompeii Express leaves about 5 hours for your own route.

Is the Pompeii ticket included?

Yes, all eight recommended trips include Pompeii entry. With the Sorrento trip, choose Pompeii & Sorrento. The cheaper Positano & Sorrento options skip Pompeii altogether.

Should I take the train or a coach?

I'd take Pompeii Express if time inside the city matters most. You'll still use a coach between Naples and Pompeii. The Pompeii-only coach trip costs less and includes a guide.

Where do the tours leave from in Rome?

All four train trips meet at Caffe Vergnano inside Rome Termini. The three coach trips meet by the lion fountain in Piazza del Popolo. For the archaeologist trip, meet outside McDonald's at Piazzale Flaminio 15.

Can I visit Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day?

Yes, with the Pompei & Vesuvius Crater Hike option, including lunch. The Geologist Walk doesn't reach the crater. The hike needs good fitness, and weather can change the itinerary.

Is lunch included?

The winery, Herculaneum and Naples train trips include lunch. The options that add Vesuvius include lunch too. Budget for your own food on the other compared options.

Do I need ID to enter Pompeii?

Bring ID and enter each traveler's name correctly. Park tickets carry names; names and visit dates can't be changed. Book your visit before leaving Rome: Pompeii has a daily limit of 20,000.

Can I cancel the tour?

All eight offer a full refund at least 24 hours before departure. That cancellation deadline applies to the tour reservation. A park ticket bought separately follows the park's refund rules.
