Rome to Pompeii by train: the Sunday direct and the change in Naples
On Sundays there is a direct train. Any other day you change in Naples. Trenitalia advertises a Frecciarossa leaving Roma Termini at 08:53 and reaching Pompei, the town station, at 10:40, returning at 18:40. On every other day the route is high speed to Naples and then either the Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, 36 minutes for €3.30, or a Trenitalia regional train plus the Pompei Link bus. Check the direct service for your own date before you plan around it.

What is the best way to get from Rome to Pompeii?
Three rail options, and they land you in different places. The name you buy a ticket to decides which.
| Option | Days | You buy to | Where it leaves you | Last leg |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Frecciarossa | Sundays, as advertised | Pompei for the train itself | Pompei, the town station | Optional Pompei Link bus to the park, €1.60 on top of the rail fare |
| High speed plus Circumvesuviana | Every day | Napoli Centrale, then Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri on EAV | Beside Porta Marina | Walk to the gate |
| High speed plus regional and bus | Every day | Pompei Scavi, which is how Trenitalia sells the combined train and bus | The park bus stop | Pompei Link bus, €1.60 on top of the rail fare; last bus back from the park 17:50 |
Trenitalia publishes the Sunday service as Frecciarossa 9693, Roma Termini 08:53, Napoli Centrale 10:03 and 10:13, Pompei 10:40, returning as 9568 from Pompei at 18:40 and into Roma Termini at 20:55. There is also a seasonal Frecciarossa plus FrecciaLink option: the bus connects at Napoli Centrale or Napoli Afragola, as your booking shows, and sets you down on via Villa dei Misteri at Pompei Scavi. Trenitalia's page calls it a summer service and named no dates when we read it on October 20, 2026; the last advertised dates ran Monday to Saturday through October 17, 2026. Search for Pompei Scavi and check availability for your date. Check availability for your date: we have not booked these trains.
How do I get from Naples to Pompeii after the high-speed train?
Rome is off this map to the north. What it shows is the stretch you cover after the high-speed train, if you take the Circumvesuviana rather than the direct Sunday service.
How do I change trains at Napoli Centrale for Pompeii?
The change happens inside one station complex, and it is the only awkward part of doing this yourself.
- High speed to Napoli Centrale. Italo publishes 55 minutes non-stop over 222 km, with 31 trains a day and fares from €14.90. Trenitalia also runs direct Frecciarossa services on the same route through the day; check the journey time for your departure. Book ahead: these are reserved-seat trains and the cheap fares go first.
- Go down to the Circumvesuviana. EAV's stop is called Napoli P. Garibaldi and sits on the Circumvesuviana level of the Napoli Centrale complex, under Corso Lucci. It is not the separate Trenitalia station of a similar name, which is where the regional trains to Pompei leave from. Trains start one stop earlier at Napoli Porta Nolana, exactly three minutes before Garibaldi on the Sorrento line.
- Take a train towards Sorrento. 34 a day, usually every 30 minutes, 36 minutes to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. Buy the €3.30 EAV single and validate it before boarding.
- Walk into Porta Marina. The gate is beside the station. Your park ticket is separate from both trains, it carries your name, and there is no re-entry once you leave.
Add the station change, any wait between trains and the walk to the gate: we do not have a dated connection to publish, so we are not quoting a door-to-door total.
Is Pompeii worth the day trip from Rome?
It depends how much of the day you are willing to spend moving. The park recommends at least two to three hours; four covers my Amphitheatre-to-Forum route, and the Villa of the Mysteries makes it a full day. The organised trips price that reality openly: the eight we compare run 9 to 13 hours from their Rome meeting points.
The honest alternative is to stop sleeping in Rome. From Naples the same site is 36 minutes and €3.30 away, with 34 trains a day, and Herculaneum and Vesuvius sit on the same lines. Stay in Naples if you want more time in Pompeii and a separate day for Herculaneum or Vesuvius.
If the day from Rome is the only option, the decision that matters is whether you want a guide. All eight compared options include entry and return transport; seven include a guided walk, and Pompeii Express leaves you to visit on your own. We set out the choice in can you visit Pompeii without a guide, and the trips themselves are compared in tours from Rome.
Where do I buy the Rome to Pompeii train tickets?
Four things you might buy, depending on the route you pick. Only one of them is the park.
Named tickets on the park's own ticketing site: €20 city, €25 with the Villa of the Mysteries, €30 for the three-day Plus. Buy before you leave Rome; the gate wants the ticket and your ID.
Italo publishes that lead-in fare for Rome–Naples, with 31 trains a day. Trenitalia sells Frecciarossa on the same route, and the direct Sunday service to Pompei is sold as a Frecciarossa to Pompei.
EAV lists three ways to pay: a QR-code paper ticket at the station window, the GoEav app, and Tap&Go with a contactless card at enabled turnstiles on its rail lines.
On Trenitalia the bus leg is sold with the rail journey: pick Pompei Scavi as your destination and €1.60 is added to the fare. Fifteen runs each way, the last back from the park at 17:50.
Train, car or tour: which way from Rome to Pompeii?
Prices below are what the operators publish for the transport. The park ticket is extra on the first three.
One Frecciarossa out in the morning and one back at 18:40, into the town station, with the Pompei Link bus sold alongside it. Check your date: the service is advertised for Sundays, not every day.
High speed to Naples, then the Circumvesuviana to the gate or a regional train plus the Pompei Link bus. You decide how long you stay.
The motorway runs Rome to Naples and on to the exit named Pompei Scavi. The park has no visitor car park: its FAQ answers that with a flat no and points to paid municipal spaces and private car parks outside. Check the driving route from your own address and the charge before you leave the car.
Coach or train, entry and return transport included on all eight we compare, a guided walk on seven. Long days, but nothing to plan and nobody to lose in the change at Naples.
If you would rather not plan it
Two of the eight we compare from Rome. Prices are the lowest listed adult fares for the compared options; check the price for your date and party. Group limits come from the listing and update every night with the price.
A two-hour guided walk inside, entry in the price, and a meal, out of Rome and back in the same day.
Two guided hours at each site, both entry tickets and a pizza lunch, in an 11-hour day from Rome.
If you book through one of these links this site may earn a commission from Viator; the price is set by Viator and the operator. It does not decide what goes in a selection: the rule is published on how we pick tours.
How early do I have to leave?
Count backwards from the gate. The park opens at 9:00 and, until October 14, admits until 17:30 and closes at 19:00; after that it is 9:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 15:30. If you are changing in Naples, the 8:03 from Garibaldi is scheduled into Pompeii at 8:39, which puts you at Porta Marina for the opening.
Coming back, the Circumvesuviana is not the constraint: its last scheduled departure from Pompei Scavi is 22:35, at Garibaldi by 23:13. The high-speed train is. Check the last departure from Naples to Rome for your own date when you book the outbound, because that single time decides how long you can stay. On the advertised Sunday direct the decision is made for you: 18:40 out of Pompei.
What I'd do: look first at whether my date is a Sunday, because the direct train removes the change entirely. Otherwise book the first leg weeks ahead for the cheap fare and keep the return flexible enough that four hours inside the site is possible rather than theoretical. If the trip is mainly about Pompeii, sleep in Naples instead.
Questions people ask about this trip
Is there a direct train from Rome to Pompeii?
Trenitalia advertises one on Sundays: a Frecciarossa out of Roma Termini at 08:53 into Pompei at 10:40, back at 18:40. It serves Pompei, the town station, not the Circumvesuviana stop by the gate. Check your date.
How long should I allow inside?
The park recommends at least two to three hours. Four covers my Amphitheatre-to-Forum route, and the Villa of the Mysteries turns it into a full day.
How much does the whole trip cost?
Transport from €14.90 for the high-speed leg plus €3.30 on the Circumvesuviana, each way, and then park admission of €20, €25 or €30 depending on which ticket you buy.
Which Naples station do I change at?
For the Circumvesuviana, EAV's Napoli P. Garibaldi, on the Circumvesuviana level of the Napoli Centrale complex under Corso Lucci. For a Trenitalia regional train to Pompei, the separate Napoli Piazza Garibaldi.
Can I see Vesuvius on the same day from Rome?
It is a hard day. The crater has its own ticket, sold online only with a time slot, and admission closes earlier in winter. From Rome this is the kind of day where an organised trip earns its price.
