What are the mysteries?
A rite. One continuous fresco covers three walls of a room that faces the sea: a ceremony for the followers of Dionysus, who sits on the central wall with Ariadne. Women, fauns, maenads and winged figures fill the side walls. In the lower right, a young woman is whipped, resting on the lap of a seated woman.
The park calls it a mysterious rite, reserved for the cult's devotees. That's the name. The painting is among the best preserved from the ancient world.
The villa is older than the fresco: 2nd century BC, rebuilt in 80 to 70 BC, when the frieze was painted. Excavated in 1909 to 1910 and again in 1929 to 1930.

What to see, in order

The hall of the mysteries
In the residential part, facing the sea. The scenes run around three walls; find Dionysus and Ariadne on the central wall.

The wine press and the other rooms
The working part: an area for making wine, with a rebuilt wooden press. The other rooms keep painted architecture in the second style, and the tablinum has small Egyptian-inspired paintings.

Will a guided tour include the villa?
All tour selections →Only if the tour holds a ticket that covers it. Most 2-hour walks include the city ticket and stay inside the walls. The 3-hour walk with the €25 ticket, the park's "Pompei +", enters the villa. What I'd do: a 2-hour walk in the city, then the villa alone on a €25 ticket.
Tour selections compare routes, tickets and meeting points; the tour page shows the route line. tour listings, data from September 19 and 20, 2026.
Before you go
Is the villa on the €20 ticket?
No. Buy the €25 ticket. If you already hold a €20 ticket, the park sells the villas route for €8, card only, at the start of the route at Porta Ercolano.
What time does it close?
16:30, last entrance 16:15, this season. The catch is the gate: Porta Ercolano admits until 17:30 in summer and 15:30 in winter. What I'd do: be through the gate by 17:00.
Is there a bus?
Not to this villa. For the usual daytime visit you reach it through Pompeii's internal route past Porta Ercolano. The park's Artebus stop at Villa dei Misteri is for boarding toward Boscoreale, not for entering the villa from the road, says the park's Artebus page.
Does Pompeii Plus include it?
The €30 row of the park's table doesn't name the villas. The €25 row does. If the villa is the point, buy the €25 ticket.
What's next to it?
