How long do you need in Pompeii?
The park says a minimum of 2 to 3 hours; I'd say two for the centre, four for the whole site, and a day if you want the villa and the far end without running. Pompeii covers 44 hectares, and you can't leave and come back on the same ticket. Pick the hours first, then the gate: it decides what you see.

- Minimum 2 to 3 hours, the park's own answer
- 44 hectares excavated; the park's map runs three paths end to end
- One entry, no re-entry. Summer last entrance 17:30, site closes 19:00
- Two gates on two train lines: Porta Marina and Piazza Anfiteatro, at opposite ends

Two hours, four hours, or the day?

The Forum and the houses around it
From Porta Marina: the Forum, the Temple of Jupiter, the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Basilica, the Stabian Baths. That's the park's Path 2, and it's what a two-hour guided walk covers.

Amphitheatre to Forum, the long way What I'd do
Enter at Piazza Anfiteatro, the park's suggested gate: the Amphitheatre, the Palaestra with the casts exhibition, the Garden of the Fugitives, then Via dell'Abbondanza to the Forum and out at Porta Marina. Paths 1 and 2 in the park's order.

Everything, and the Villa of the Mysteries
Paths 1 to 3: the two above, then the House of the Vettii, the necropolis and the villa outside the walls. The villa is on the €25 ticket, and its gate, Porta Ercolano, closes at 17:30 in summer.

Is 2 hours in Pompeii enough?
For the Forum and the houses around it, yes. That's Path 2, and it's the walk most guided tours sell: the Forum, the baths, the Basilica, a house or two. You'll see Pompeii as a town.
What two hours won't give you: the Amphitheatre and the casts at the eastern end, and the Villa of the Mysteries outside the walls. They sit at the two far ends of a site 44 hectares across. Add an hour for each end. Four hours covers both without running.
The park itself says 2 to 3 hours minimum. Take the 3 if you're choosing a slot, and enter by 15:30 in summer to keep the last hour before closing for the walk back to the gate.

How long do most people spend at Pompeii?
The park's own answer is a minimum of 2 to 3 hours. Guided walks from the gate run two hours; day trips from Rome give you two to five hours inside.
Can I leave for lunch and come back?
No. Every Pompeii ticket is one entry. There's a restaurant inside near the Forum and a picnic area by the Amphitheatre gate; bags up to 30 × 30 × 15 cm come in with you.
How difficult is it to walk in Pompeii?
The park warns of irregular walking surfaces: the streets are the original paving stones. The park asks for comfortable shoes, and the site is 44 hectares of them.
Is there a dress code?
The park's regulations don't set one. Shoes matter more than clothes: the park warns of irregular walking surfaces, and it's paving stones all the way.
What time should I enter?
Summer: from 9:00, and by 15:30 if you want three hours before the 19:00 closing with a margin. Winter: last entrance 15:30, closing 17:00, so the morning is the visit.
Which gate for a short visit?
Porta Marina, from Pompei Villa dei Misteri station: the Forum is the first thing Path 2 reaches. For the Amphitheatre end, Piazza Anfiteatro from Pompei Santuario.
