Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii if it's your one day near Naples; Herculaneum if you've seen Pompeii, or you have two hours and want houses, not a city. Pompeii is a town of streets, the Forum and the Amphitheatre: €20 to €30, and a day. Herculaneum is four hectares of houses with their upper floors and wood still in place: €16, and two hours. Both are on the same train line, and you can do both in a day if you start early.

Which one for you?

One day, first time: Pompeii. It's the whole town, and the names you know are here: the Forum, the Amphitheatre, the casts. Two hours covers the centre; four, most of it.
Two hours: Herculaneum.Four hectares, a few streets deep, and the houses keep their upper floors and wood. Two hours is a full visit.
You've done Pompeii: Herculaneum. Not a smaller Pompeii. The fiery clouds and mudslides that buried it kept what ash didn't: upper floors, beams, a boat, the beach with its boat sheds.
Both in a day: Pompeii in the morning, Herculaneum after.Same train line. Pompeii admits until 17:30, Herculaneum until 18:00, so Herculaneum takes the late slot.
Herculaneum wasn't buried by the same ash. It was hit by fiery clouds at around 400 °C and then by mudslides, and sits under about 20 m of it. That's why the wood is still there.
What I'd do: Pompeii first, always. Then Herculaneum on another morning, before the day gets hot.

Can I do both in one day?

  1. Buy the Pompeii ticket for the morning before you go: named, and the morning fills first in summer.
  2. Pompeii from 9:00. Porta Marina from Villa dei Misteri station, or the Amphitheatre gate from Pompei Santuario. Give it four hours if you want both ends.
  3. Train to Ercolano Scavi, toward Naples on the same Sorrento line.
  4. Herculaneum by 16:00. Last entry 18:00 in summer; two hours is a full visit, and the site closes at 19:00.
What I'd do: only if it's your one day here. Otherwise Herculaneum deserves its own morning, and your legs will agree.

People also ask

Is Pompeii or Herculaneum better?

Neither, and the question hides the real one: how much time do you have. A day: Pompeii. Two hours: Herculaneum. Both: Pompeii first.

Why isn't Herculaneum as famous as Pompeii?

Four hectares are excavated of about twenty; the rest lies under the modern town, beneath around 20 m of hardened volcanic material. Pompeii is a whole city on the surface.

Are the skeletons in Herculaneum real?

Yes. Some 300 were found in 1980 in the boat sheds on the ancient beach, in nine of the twelve vaults. Since July 15, 2026 a new path, over 100 m long, takes you down to the beach to see them.

Which is the base for Vesuvius?

Either. The national park lists taxis and shuttles from Ercolano Scavi station, and EAV buses from Pompei Villa dei Misteri station. The crater ticket is €10, online only, whichever you start from.

Is there a combined ticket?

Each park sells its own: Pompeii on Vivaticket, Herculaneum through CoopCulture. Pompeii Plus, €30, covers Oplontis and Stabiae, not Herculaneum.

Which is better with kids or in the heat?

Herculaneum: two hours and done, on a site a few streets deep. Pompeii is a whole town of streets. What I'd do: in August, Pompeii from 9:00 and out by lunch, Herculaneum another day.

Chiara VitaleWrites pompeii.day

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate, and I go into the site most weeks on a MyPompeii card. This page is those desk answers, checked against both parks' own pages. Report a correction.
