Pompeii and Herculaneum tours: our selection

Our selection: 4 of the 111 Pompeii and Herculaneum tours listed on Viator. We went through them all and kept the four with the best reviews, ratings and what's actually in the price. Then we compared those four by time at each site, which entries are in the price, transport, group size and where you meet.

By Chiara Vitale · Updated September 20, 2026

Choose your departure city first. These four shared trips take 7 hours from Naples, 8 from Sorrento or 11 from Rome. Starting prices for the compared options run from €116 to €279 per adult.

Take Rome by train with pizza for 2 guided hours at each site. Coaches cover the local transfers. On the Naples minibus, your guide is an archaeologist.

Sorrento with restaurant lunch gives you 2 guided hours at each site. The Sorrento coach with light lunch has up to 25 people per guide. It's from €119 with lunch.

Both entry tickets are included; the Naples ticket excludes the Villa of the Mysteries. Lunch costs extra from Naples. The Rome trip can't accommodate wheelchairs or other mobility aids.

What I'd do: I'd choose the Naples minibus for an archaeologist at both sites.

What should I check before booking?

How much does a Pompeii and Herculaneum tour cost?

Budget €116 to €279 per adult for the four compared shared options. These are Viator starting prices. The Naples minibus starts at €116. Sorrento with light lunch starts at €119 and Sorrento with restaurant lunch at €155. Rome by train with pizza starts at €279. What I'd do: choose the departure city first, then compare the named options.

How long is the day, and how much time do I get at each site?

The Naples minibus takes 7 hours. The Sorrento restaurant coach and light lunch coach take 8 hours. Rome by train takes 11 hours. Those totals include travel. Rome and both Sorrento trips give you 2 guided hours at each site. The restaurant coach's 3-hour Pompeii stop includes lunch.

Do I need a car, and where will I meet the tour?

You don't need a car between the sites. All four shared picks include return travel from their city meeting points. Rome uses trains to Naples and coaches between the sites. The Naples minibus meets outside Starhotels Terminus. Rome by train meets at Caffe Vergnano inside Termini. Sorrento with light lunch uses Achille Lauro parking; the restaurant lunch coach uses assigned meeting points. Hotel collection isn't guaranteed. What I'd do: choose a meeting point I can reach easily, even with a car.

Are both entry tickets and lunch included?

Both entry tickets are included on all four shared options. Rome by train includes pizza lunch. The Sorrento restaurant coach includes a restaurant meal. For the Sorrento light lunch coach, choose Full-day tour with lunch. The Naples minibus leaves lunch and drinks out. Its Pompeii ticket excludes the Villa of the Mysteries. What I'd do: select the lunch option before comparing Sorrento prices.

Can I bring children or a baby?

All four shared picks accept infant bookings. Rome by train and the Naples minibus use infant ages 0 to 3. The Sorrento restaurant coach and light lunch coach use 0 to 1. Adult tour rates start at 18 from Rome or Naples, and 12 on both Sorrento trips. Infants travel on an adult's lap on the restaurant lunch coach. What I'd do: check each child's age band before comparing family prices.

Are these tours suitable if I have mobility or health limits?

Rome by train and the Sorrento restaurant coach require moderate fitness. Rome can't accommodate wheelchairs, scooters or other mobility aids. The restaurant coach isn't recommended for travelers with spinal injuries or poor cardiovascular health. The Naples minibus isn't recommended for wheelchair users. Visually impaired visitors need a dedicated personal assistant on that Naples trip. What I'd do: check the access conditions for everyone before booking.

What happens if the weather is bad or I need to cancel?

Bad weather can cancel Rome by train. Too few bookings can cancel the Sorrento restaurant coach and light lunch coach. If you cancel any of the four shared options at least 24 hours before departure, you get a full refund. Later cancellations get no refund. What I'd do: cancel before that cutoff if my plans changed.

What should I bring?

1. Have your tour ticket ready. Final travel documents for Rome by train may arrive close to the departure date. 2. Bring ID or a passport for your named Pompeii ticket. 3. Pack a bag within 30 x 30 x 15 cm. That's the park's permitted size.

Which tour should I choose for a first visit?

Choose a departure from where you're staying. The Naples minibus gives you an archaeologist at both sites, with the transfers arranged. From Rome, the train trip with pizza includes 2 guided hours at each site. From Sorrento, the light lunch coach includes both guided walks and lunch. What I'd do: take the Naples option for the archaeologist if I were based there.

What time do the tours leave?

Rome by train is scheduled at 8:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The Sorrento restaurant coach runs at 8:15 on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays. The Sorrento light lunch coach also runs at 8:15, with Tuesday added to those days. Schedules; check your date when booking. What I'd do: choose the light lunch trip if Tuesday were my Sorrento day.
