Pompeii map: the gates, the stations and what is where

Three entrances, two Circumvesuviana stations, one street from gate to gate. Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra are beside Pompei Villa dei Misteri station on the Naples–Sorrento line; Piazza Anfiteatro is near Pompei Santuario on the Naples–Poggiomarino line. The park’s own map is a free PDF with three numbered paths. Below: our map of the site, drawn from OpenStreetMap, with the buildings numbered and their status today.

What is where, by quarter

Pompeii is numbered in regiones, the quarters the excavators drew; the park’s list of open buildings uses them too. The numbers match the map; hours are this season’s and come from that list.

Which entrance should I use?

Porta Marina

Pompei Villa dei Misteri, Naples–Sorrento line, beside the gate

The west entrance, a ramp up to the Forum. Ticket office, audio guides, luggage storage for a fee and the park’s guide point are here. Closest to the Forum, the Basilica, the Sanctuary of Apollo and, further up, the House of the Faun and the House of the Vettii.

Best for a 2-hour visit of the center. The park’s Path 2 ends here; Path 3 exits here too.

Piazza Esedra

Pompei Villa dei Misteri, a few minutes south of Porta Marina

The second west entrance, also called Porta Marina Inferiore. Ticket office and audio guides. Most guided walks that meet at Vittoria cafe or Suisse restaurant start from this square. It is the exit the park suggests after Path 1.

Best if your guide meets you here, or as a way out after the Amphitheatre end.

Piazza Anfiteatro

Pompei Santuario, Naples–Poggiomarino line; also the closest to the Trenitalia station

The east entrance, next to the Amphitheatre and the Large Palaestra with the casts exhibition. Ticket office, luggage storage for a fee, audio guides. The park calls it the suggested entrance: Path 1 starts here, and so does the accessible route Pompeii for All. School groups must use it.

Best for a full day walked east to west, and for strollers and wheelchairs.

Park pages “How to get there”, “Visitor services” and “Pompeii for All”. Bags over 30 × 30 × 15 cm are not allowed in; the storage takes them.

What are the three paths on the park’s map?

The park’s map draws three numbered paths that follow one another from Piazza Anfiteatro to Porta Marina. It gives no times for them; the park’s minimum for a visit is 2 to 3 hours, and you can’t leave and come back on the same ticket.

Path Quarters Starts Ends What it passes
Path 1 Regiones I and II Piazza Anfiteatro Piazza Esedra, or continue to Path 2 Amphitheatre, Large Palaestra with the casts, Praedia of Julia Felix (not in the park’s current list), House of Venus in the Shell, House of the Orchard, Thermopolium of Vetutius Placidus (visible from outside), Fullonica of Stephanus, wall inscriptions
Path 2 Regiones VII and VIII Stabian Baths Porta Marina, or continue to Path 3 Stabian Baths, Forum and Temple of Jupiter, Sanctuary of Apollo, Basilica, Antiquarium with the casts, frescoes and the statue of Livia
Path 3 Regio VI and outside the walls House of the Vettii Porta Marina House of the Vettii, Necropolis of the Herculaneum Gate, Villa of the Mysteries: the villa is on the €25 and €30 tickets, and its gate, Porta Ercolano, admits until 17:30 in summer and 15:30 in winter
What I’d do: two hours, enter at Porta Marina and walk Path 2 backwards, Forum first. A full day, enter at Piazza Anfiteatro and take the three paths in the park’s order, the villa last. The hours-by-plan page has the timings.

The park’s map, edition on its map and guide page; park FAQ on visit length; hours from the Houses list.

Where is Pompeii?

On the Bay of Naples, south-east of the city, at the foot of Vesuvius: the volcano is due north of the excavations and visible from most of the site. The modern town is Pompei, with one i; the ancient city is Pompeii, and the archaeological area lies on the town’s western edge.

Two Circumvesuviana lines from Naples pass the site. The Naples–Sorrento line stops at Pompei Villa dei Misteri, beside Porta Marina, and continues to Sorrento; Herculaneum is on the same line, at Ercolano Scavi. The Naples–Poggiomarino line stops at Pompei Santuario, near Piazza Anfiteatro. Trenitalia trains from Naples and Salerno stop at Pompei, on the far side of the modern town, and the Pompei Link takes about 15 minutes from there to the park.

Coming from Rome, most people change in Naples; the direct day-trip coaches and trains are compared in our From Rome selection.

The neighbours
  • Vesuvius, north: its own €10 ticket, a 4,010 m crater path; tickets and last entry by month, is it active?
  • Herculaneum, on the Naples–Sorrento line at Ercolano Scavi: its own €16 ticket; what to know
  • Oplontis, Boscoreale, Stabiae: the smaller sites on the €30 Plus ticket, linked by the park’s Artebus shuttle
  • Naples Archaeological Museum: where the originals from the House of the Faun and many casts’ finds are kept

Park page “How to get there”; Artebus timetable.

Where do the guided walks meet?

All tour selections →

Of the 78 tours in our selections, 15 meet on Piazza Esedra (Vittoria cafe or Suisse restaurant), 12 at Porta Marina opposite Hortus, 16 at the station or Bar Sgambati beside it, and 0 at Piazza Anfiteatro; the rest start in Naples, Rome, Sorrento or at a hotel. Each tour page names its meeting point and the gate it uses. What I’d do: pick the walk by its gate if you arrive by train: Esedra and Porta Marina for the Sorrento line, Piazza Anfiteatro for the Poggiomarino line.

Meeting points from the operators’ Viator listings, data from September 19 and 20, 2026.

Before you go

Is there a free map of Pompeii?

Yes. The park publishes its map as a free PDF with the three numbered paths, toilets, water points and the main monuments. A mini guide in nine languages sits on the same page. Our map above is drawn from OpenStreetMap and shows the same site with today’s open buildings.

Which entrance is closest to the Forum?

Porta Marina. The ramp from the gate leads straight up to the Forum, with the Sanctuary of Apollo and the Basilica on the way. Its station is Pompei Villa dei Misteri on the Sorrento line.

Which entrance does the park suggest?

Piazza Anfiteatro. The map’s Path 1 starts there, and the accessible route Pompeii for All does too. Its station is Pompei Santuario on the Poggiomarino line.

Can I enter at one gate and leave by another?

Yes. The park’s own paths do exactly that: in at Piazza Anfiteatro, out at Piazza Esedra or Porta Marina. What you can’t do is leave and come back on the same ticket.

How big is the site?

The park’s FAQ says 44 hectares and recommends 2 to 3 hours as a minimum. Its guide counts 66 hectares for the ancient city, 49 excavated; the regulations page says about 22 of the excavated hectares can be visited. Via dell’Abbondanza runs the length of the site from the Forum to the Amphitheatre end.

Is there an accessible route?

Pompeii for All, over 3.5 km from Piazza Anfiteatro along the main streets to the Sanctuary of Venus, for wheelchairs and buggies. The park warns that some stretches still have uneven paving and slopes; access and, for now, exit are at Piazza Anfiteatro.

Where are the toilets?

At several points inside, marked on the park’s map; the self-service restaurant is at the Casina dell’Aquila, first aid near the Chora Café. Water fountains are along the main streets.

Is the park on Google Maps?

Yes, the park links Google Maps for each of its sites from the map page. For finding the gates it works; inside the walls, the park’s own PDF is clearer.

Chiara Vitale Writes pompeii.day

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate, and I go into the site most weeks on a MyPompeii card. This page is those desk answers, checked against the park's own list of open buildings and its notices. Report a correction.
