House of the Faun: is it open, and what will I see?

Open 9:00 to 17:00 this season, on any Pompeii ticket, in Regio VI. One of the largest houses in the city, a whole block of about 3,000 square meters: the dancing Faun in the atrium pool and the Alexander mosaic in the room between the two gardens. Both are copies; the originals are in Naples.

Whose house was it?

A family the house itself names: the Satrii. The bronze satyr, the Faun, is a play on their name, and it stands where it stood, in the pool of the main atrium. It's a copy. The original is in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.

The house dates from the 2nd century BC and fills its whole block, about 3,000 square meters. Wealth starts at the pavement: the word HAVE, welcome, set into the street; a doorway framed by pillars with carved capitals; an entrance floor of yellow, green, red and pink marble triangles. Above, on both sides, small temples in relief mark the household shrine.

Two atriums, two peristyles, and rooms of every rank around them: reception rooms, family rooms, service rooms. In the exedra between the two gardens lies a copy of the mosaic of Alexander the Great facing Darius, 2nd century BC. The original is in Naples too.

The Faun isn't the god of the house. It's a pun on the owners' name.

What to see, in order

The doorway and the first atrium

3,000 square meters, one whole block

Read HAVE in the pavement before you step in. The marble floor of the entrance, the pillars of the door, then the atrium with the Faun in the pool. This is the front the family showed the street.

Regio VI · 9:00–17:00

The Alexander mosaic and the two gardens

2nd century BC, the house and the mosaic

Walk through to the exedra between the first and second peristyle. The battle mosaic on the floor is a copy; the original, found here, is in Naples. Continue through to the second peristyle.

Copies in place; originals at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples
What I'd do: come at opening, when the atrium is empty, and stand by the pool for a minute before the groups arrive.

Check the route line. The station walk names the House of the Faun and the Vettii; many 2-hour walks from Porta Marina stay around the Forum. What I'd do: a guided walk for the Forum, this house alone afterward.

Tour selections compare routes, tickets and meeting points; the tour page shows the route line. tour listings, data from September 19 and 20, 2026.

Before you go

Which ticket do I need?

Any Pompeii ticket: €20, €25 or €30. The house is inside the walls, in Regio VI.

Is the Faun the original?

No. The park's page says the originals of the statue and the mosaics are in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. What stands in the pool is a copy in the original place.

Where is the Alexander mosaic?

A copy lies in the exedra, the room between the first and second peristyle. The original, 2nd century BC, is in Naples.

How long does it take?

The park publishes no times. It's the largest house in Pompeii; give it 20 minutes, more if the second garden is quiet. What I'd do: pair it with the Vettii, a few streets away.

Is it open every day?

The park's list says 9:00 to 17:00 this season, the site's full hours. The list changes; this page rereads it twice a day, and the full list shows what changed.

When was it excavated?

1829 to 1833, then 1900, then 1960 to 1962. The Alexander mosaic came out in the first campaign.

Chiara Vitale Writes pompeii.day

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate, and I go into the site most weeks on a MyPompeii card. This page is those desk answers, checked against the park's own list of open buildings and its notices. Report a correction.
