Is the House of the Vettii open, and what will I see?

Yes: 9:15 to 16:20, last entrance 16:00, on any Pompeii ticket. It's in Regio VI, at the Porta Marina end of the site. Two freedmen brothers, a garden with water jets, and the frieze of Cupids at their trades.

Who were the Vettii?

Two brothers, Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva. Freedmen, former slaves, who made their money in trade. The house says so at the door: a painting of Priapus, the god of prosperity, to the right of the entrance.

The house was remodeled in the Augustan period, in the 1st century BC. Out went the tablinum, the formal room other houses keep. In came a large garden with statues and water jets, and the best rooms were opened onto it.

The frieze of Cupids is the thing to find. Small winged figures sell wine, clean clothes, grow flowers, bring in the harvest, make jewelry and perfume: the trades of the town, painted around one room.

Not a noble family: the park identifies the owners as freedmen whose money came from trade.

What to see, in order

The garden and the rooms around it

1894 to 1895, when the house was dug out

The rebuild removed the tablinum to make room for the garden: statues, water jets, and the richest rooms opening onto the colonnade. Start here and let the crowd move on.

The frieze of Cupids

6 trades on one frieze

In the room off the peristyle. Look for wine sellers, fullers, florists, harvesters, goldsmiths and perfumers. The lararium, the household shrine, is in the kitchen area.

One small room by the kitchen has erotic paintings

A graffito at the entrance of the house names a prostitute, Eutychus, and is linked to that small room. With children, stay in the garden and the frieze room.

What I'd do: the garden first, then the frieze, 20 minutes in all, more if it's quiet.

  1. Take the Sorrento line to Pompei Villa dei Misteri. Enter at Porta Marina with your ID; the ticket carries your name.
  2. Follow the park's Path 3 for Regio VI: the House of the Vettii, then the necropolis and the Villa of the Mysteries, back out at Porta Marina.
  3. Be at the house before 18:00. It closes at 18:20; the site itself stops admitting at 17:30.
  4. Stay inside the site. Your ticket doesn't allow re-entry.

Check the route line on the tour page before you book. The 2-hour station walk names it. Other routes may stay near the Forum: read the stop list before you book. What I'd do: take a small-group walk, then see the house alone afterward.

Tour selections compare routes, tickets and meeting points; the tour page shows the route line. tour listings, data from September 19 and 20, 2026.

Before you go

Which ticket do I need?

Any Pompeii ticket: €20, €25 or €30. The house is inside the walls. The €25 ticket is for the villas outside the walls, not for this.

Which gate is nearest?

Porta Marina, beside Pompei Villa dei Misteri station on the Sorrento line. The house is on the park's Path 3, the Regio VI route.

Is it suitable for children?

Yes, with one note. A small room by the kitchen has erotic paintings. What I'd do: skip that room and let the children count the Cupids' trades.

How long does it take?

The park publishes no times. I'd allow about 20 minutes for the garden and the frieze; a quiet half hour is better. It's one house on a route of many.

Is it open every day?

The park's list says 9:15 to 16:20 with last entrance 16:00 this season. The list changes; this page rereads it twice a day, and the full list shows what changed.

When was it excavated?

1894 to 1895. The house had been remodeled in the 1st century BC, in the Augustan period, when the garden took the place of the tablinum.

Chiara Vitale Writes pompeii.day

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate, and I go into the site most weeks on a MyPompeii card. This page is those desk answers, checked against the park's own list of open buildings and its notices. Report a correction.
