Naples to Pompeii by train: times, fares and the two stations

Take the Circumvesuviana from Napoli P. Garibaldi: 36 minutes, €3.30, 34 departures a day. That is EAV's own stop, on the Circumvesuviana level of the Napoli Centrale complex under Corso Lucci, and not the Trenitalia station of a similar name. Ride the Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, beside Porta Marina. Park admission is a separate, named ticket.

Which Circumvesuviana line goes from Naples to Pompeii?

One line, along the bay and round the foot of Vesuvius. Stay on the Sorrento-bound train until Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri: the intermediate stops vary by departure.

What is the best way to get to Pompeii from Naples?

The Circumvesuviana, unless you are driving. It leaves from under the main station, runs usually every 30 minutes and puts you at the gate rather than in the modern town.

  1. Start at Napoli P. Garibaldi. Follow the EAV and Circumvesuviana signs down from Napoli Centrale: the line's station sits under Corso Lucci inside the same complex. Trains begin one stop earlier at Napoli Porta Nolana, exactly three minutes before Garibaldi on the Sorrento line and two on the Poggiomarino one.
  2. Buy the EAV single, €3.30. Other operators' single for the same zone is €3.50; the integrated ticket is €4.30 and is valid 140 minutes from first validation for one interurban journey inside the zone. Validate before boarding and keep it until you leave the station.
  3. Take a train towards Sorrento. Journey time is 36 minutes on every departure. Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri is the stop you want; the one before it is Villa Regina.
  4. Walk to Porta Marina. The gate is on via Villa dei Misteri, beside the station. The same station also serves Piazza Esedra. Both have ticket offices, and the gate wants your named ticket and ID.

Scheduled times, counted by us from EAV's Naples–Sorrento timetable in force from October 17, 2026, matching train numbers between the departure and arrival rows. Check EAV's board on your travel day.

Which line goes to which gate?

Two Circumvesuviana lines pass Pompeii and they land you at opposite ends of the site. This is the choice that actually matters.

Line Stop Gate Journey Trains a day First out Last out Last back to Naples
Naples–Sorrento Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri Porta Marina, Piazza Esedra 36 min 34 5:33 22:03 22:35, in at 23:13
Naples–Poggiomarino Pompei Santuario Piazza Anfiteatro 47 min 29 5:42 19:42 20:06, in at 20:54

The Poggiomarino line is the slower one and finishes earlier: 19:42 from Naples against 22:03. Coming back, the Sorrento-line trains run 38 minutes, longer than the outward run, so do not plan the return on the outward figure.

How much is the train from Naples to Pompeii?

Pompeii sits in fare zone NA3 from Naples. The Circumvesuviana is run by EAV, so the EAV price is the one on the window.

Ticket What it covers Price
EAV single One trip on the Circumvesuviana €3.30
Other operators' single One trip with one operator in the zone €3.50
Integrated, 140 minutes One interurban journey in the zone, with the local connections the zone allows, from first validation €4.30

The integrated ticket is not a return ticket and not a network pass. Campania raised single, hourly and urban daily fares on October 1, 2026, by regional decree 55 of July 3, 2026, tracking the ISTAT index. The same notice says ANM and EAV left their own company fares unchanged, which is why the EAV single is below the other one. Season passes were not raised, and tickets bought earlier stay usable.

Where can I buy Circumvesuviana train tickets?

Four things you might buy, and only one of them is the park. Nothing here goes through us.

Pompeii admission €20 · €25 · €30

Named tickets on the park's own ticketing site: €20 city, €25 with the Villa of the Mysteries, €30 for the three-day Plus. The gate wants the ticket and your ID, and there is no re-entry.

Circumvesuviana ticket €3.30

EAV lists three ways to pay: a QR-code paper ticket at the station window under its new sales system, the GoEav app on your phone, and Tap&Go with a contactless card at enabled turnstiles on its rail lines.

Pompei Link, train plus bus €1.60

If you take a Trenitalia regional train to Pompei town station instead, the Pompei Link bus covers the last stretch. It is sold with the rail journey: pick Pompei Scavi as your destination and €1.60 is added to the fare. Fifteen runs each way, 08:45 to 17:40 from the station and 08:55 to 17:50 back from the park.

A guided day from Naples from €65

From €65 per adult for the eight options in our Naples selection. Entry is inside the price on six of them; on two it is paid separately, and the named option decides whether you get a live guide or an audio guide.

Can I take the Campania Express?

EAV suspended the service from October 1, 2026, until further notice. Its Campania Express page was taken down by October 20, 2026, with no notice of a return.

The Campania Express was the reserved-seat tourist train on this line, at €15 one way. EAV's notice sets out the refund route: for tickets bought from EAV use its complaints form, and for tickets bought through another seller ask that seller. While it is suspended, the ordinary Circumvesuviana is the train, and seats are not reserved on it.

What else gets you from Naples to Pompeii?

The park's own page lists these.

€1.60 on top of the rail fare
Trenitalia and the Pompei Link

The Naples–Salerno line stops at Pompei, the town station, and the Pompei Link bus runs from the station forecourt to the park. The last bus back from the park leaves at 17:50, earlier than the summer closing at 19:00.

By car

Naples–Salerno motorway, exit Pompei Scavi. The park has no visitor car park: its FAQ answers that question with a flat no and points to paid municipal spaces and private car parks outside. Check the charge before you leave the car.

€70 flat taxi fare
By taxi

Naples publishes a fixed one-way fare per cab to Pompei scavi on its taxi tariff sheet. Ask for the €70 fixed fare before the ride starts. It covers the call-out, night, holiday and baggage supplements. Motorway tolls are extra, and so is the €5 minivan supplement for more than four passengers or a requested seven-to-nine-seat vehicle.

3 bus services
By bus

The park lists SITA from Naples and Salerno, plus Busitalia Campania line 4 and the line 50 motorway coach from Salerno. Check the bus operator's timetable for your date.

Can Pompeii be a day trip from Naples?

Comfortably, and you can leave late. The park opens at 9:00 and, until October 14, closes at 19:00 with last admission at 17:30; after that the winter hours are 9:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 15:30. The 8:03 from Garibaldi is scheduled into Pompei Scavi at 8:39, outside the gate before it opens.

The park recommends at least two to three hours. I would allow four for my Amphitheatre-to-Forum route, and a full day if you also want the Villa of the Mysteries. How much time to give it is the question we answer separately in how long you need in Pompeii. Either way the trains outlast the park: the last scheduled departure from Pompei Scavi is 22:35, reaching Garibaldi at 23:13.

Two things to settle before you go. The park ticket is named, so buy it in your own name on the park's ticketing site; the three prices and what each covers are on our tickets page. And there is no re-entry, so the Villa of the Mysteries, which lies outside the walls, has to come inside the same visit.

What I'd do: take the 8:03 from Garibaldi on a €3.30 EAV single, enter at Porta Marina when the gate opens, and keep the Poggiomarino line for a day when I want to start at the Amphitheatre and walk west.

Questions people ask about this trip

Which station do I leave from in Naples?

Napoli P. Garibaldi, EAV's stop on the Circumvesuviana level of the Napoli Centrale complex under Corso Lucci. Trenitalia's Napoli Piazza Garibaldi is a different station. Trains start one stop earlier at Napoli Porta Nolana.

Is the park ticket included in the train fare?

No. The €3.30 covers the train. Park admission is separate and named, and the gate wants the ticket and your ID.

How long should I allow inside?

The park recommends at least two to three hours. Four covers my Amphitheatre-to-Forum route, and the Villa of the Mysteries turns it into a full day.

Do I need to book the train?

Not on the ordinary Circumvesuviana, where seats are not reserved. The reserved-seat Campania Express is suspended from October 1, 2026, by EAV's notice.

Which platform is the train back to Naples?

EAV's board showed platform 2 for Naples and platform 1 for Sorrento when we checked it on October 20, 2026. Follow the board for your own train.

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate. The times and fares on this page come from the operators' own timetables and fare calculator, not from another guide. Report a correction.
