Sorrento to Pompeii by train: times, fares and which gate

34 trains a day, 35 minutes, €2.80. Sorrento is the end of the Circumvesuviana's Naples line, so every train out of it passes Pompeii, with no change. Get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, beside Porta Marina. Park admission is a separate, named ticket.

Which Circumvesuviana line goes from Sorrento to Pompeii?

One line from the end of the peninsula, round the bay. Get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri, after Pioppaino, and follow the station names rather than counting dots on the map.

How do I get from Sorrento to Pompeii?

One train, no change. Sorrento is the terminus, so you board where the train starts.

  1. Take any train towards Naples. Every departure from Sorrento runs the full line through Pompeii, usually every 30 minutes. You board at the terminus; seats are not reserved or guaranteed.
  2. Buy the EAV single, €2.80. Other operators' single for the same zone is €3.00; the integrated ticket is €3.70 and is valid 100 minutes from first validation for one interurban journey inside the zone. Validate before boarding and keep it until you leave the station.
  3. Get off at Pompei Scavi Villa dei Misteri. It is 35 minutes from Sorrento, on every departure. Coming from Sorrento, Pioppaino is the stop before Pompei Scavi; the next stop after Pompeii is Villa Regina.
  4. Walk to Porta Marina. The gate is beside the station on via Villa dei Misteri. The same station also serves Piazza Esedra. Both sell tickets, and the park wants the named ticket with your ID.

Scheduled times, counted by us from EAV's Naples–Sorrento timetable in force from October 17, 2026. Check EAV's board on your travel day.

When is the last train back to Sorrento?

Later than the park. The gates shut long before the line does, so the evening is not the constraint on this trip.

Direction Trains a day First Last Journey
Sorrento to Pompei Scavi 34 5:30, in at 6:05 22:00, in at 22:35 35 min
Pompei Scavi to Sorrento 34 6:09, in at 6:45 22:39, in at 23:15 36 min

Until October 14 the park closes at 19:00 with last admission at 17:30; after that it is 9:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 15:30. Either way several scheduled trains leave after closing. EAV's board showed platform 1 for Sorrento and platform 2 for Naples when we checked on October 20, 2026; follow the board for your own train.

How much is the train from Sorrento to Pompeii?

Pompeii is in fare zone AC3 from Sorrento. The Circumvesuviana belongs to EAV, so the EAV column is the price at the window.

Ticket What it covers Price
EAV single One trip on the Circumvesuviana €2.80
Other operators' single One trip with one operator in the zone €3.00
Integrated, 100 minutes One interurban journey in the zone, with the local connections the zone allows, from first validation €3.70

The integrated ticket runs 100 minutes in this zone, not the 140 it allows from Naples: the validity goes with the zone. It is not a return ticket and not a network pass. Campania raised single, hourly and urban daily fares on October 1, 2026, by regional decree 55 of July 3, 2026; the notice says ANM and EAV left their own company fares unchanged.

Where do I buy the Sorrento to Pompeii train ticket?

Four things you might buy, and only one of them is the park. The crater ticket and a tour are optional.

Pompeii admission €20 · €25 · €30

Named tickets on the park's own ticketing site: €20 city, €25 with the Villa of the Mysteries, €30 for the three-day Plus. The gate wants the ticket and your ID, and there is no re-entry.

Circumvesuviana ticket €2.80

EAV lists three ways to pay: a QR-code paper ticket at the station window under its new sales system, the GoEav app on your phone, and Tap&Go with a contactless card at enabled turnstiles on its rail lines.

Vesuvius crater ticket €10

Sold online only, with a time slot, and separate from everything else. The buses to the crater leave from the forecourt of the Villa dei Misteri station at Pompeii.

A guided day from the coast from €75

From €75 per adult for the compared departures from Sorrento, or €65 for the option that starts at Salerno port. All five include entry and a guide.

What happened to the Campania Express?

EAV suspended the service from October 1, 2026, until further notice. Its Campania Express page was taken down by October 20, 2026, with no notice of a return.

It was the reserved-seat tourist train on exactly this stretch, Sorrento to Naples by way of Pompeii and Herculaneum, at €15 one way. EAV's notice sets out the refund route: for tickets bought from EAV use its complaints form, and for tickets bought through another seller ask that seller. Until it returns, the ordinary Circumvesuviana is the train, with no reserved seats.

What else can you do with the same day?

Sorrento sits on the line that strings the sites together, which is the real advantage of starting here.

€2.40 from Pompeii
Add Herculaneum

Ercolano Scavi is further up the same line, about 21 minutes on, in zone AC2 from Pompeii. Only 34 of the 34 trains towards Naples call there, so check the stop list before you board.

€10 crater ticket
Add Vesuvius

EAV buses to the crater leave from the Villa dei Misteri station forecourt. The crater ticket is separate, sold online only, and admission closes earlier in winter.

Free shuttle for visitors
Add Oplontis or Boscoreale

The park's Artebus shuttles link Pompeii with Boscoreale and Oplontis on separate timetables from Piazza Esedra. For Stabiae the park sends you by train to Castellammare di Stabia and then a local shuttle. Oplontis and Stabiae are not served on Tuesdays, and the final rounds collect returning visitors rather than carrying new ones out.

Shuttle free for park visitors; site admission depends on your ticket

Can I reach the Amphitheatre gate from Sorrento?

Not on one train. Piazza Anfiteatro is served by Pompei Santuario on the Naples–Poggiomarino line, which does not run to Sorrento. The change is at Torre Annunziata–Oplonti, where both lines stop, and from Naples that line takes 47 minutes against 36 on the Sorrento one.

For almost every plan from Sorrento the answer is simply Porta Marina, and if you want to come out at the other end you walk the length of the site, which is the point of visiting. Which gate suits which route is laid out on our map of the gates and stations.

What I'd do: take the 8:00 from Sorrento, scheduled in at 8:35, and walk into Porta Marina when the gate opens. Herculaneum on a second day rather than squeezed into the same one.

Questions people ask about this trip

How long does the train take?

35 minutes on every departure. Coming back, 36 minutes.

Do I need to book?

Not on the ordinary Circumvesuviana, which has no seat reservation. The reserved-seat Campania Express is suspended by EAV's notice.

Is the park ticket included?

No. €2.80 covers the train. Park admission is separate and named; the three prices are on our tickets page.

How long should I allow inside?

The park recommends at least two to three hours. Four covers my Amphitheatre-to-Forum route, and the Villa of the Mysteries turns it into a full day.

Can I do Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day from Sorrento?

Check the bus connections and the crater slot first; the crater ticket is separate and sold online. Allow the park's two to three hours as a minimum, and more if you want both ends of the site.

I grew up in Castellammare di Stabia, under the volcano, and spent six seasons on hotel front desks in Sorrento. Which ticket, which train, which gate, how many hours: I've answered these more times than I can count.

Now I live in Pompei, ten minutes on foot from the Amphitheatre gate. The times and fares on this page come from the operators' own timetables and fare calculator, not from another guide. Report a correction.
