Pompeii tours with an archaeologist: 7 walks compared

Our selection: 7 of the 135 Pompeii walks whose listing names an archaeologist. Each row is one named option: what the price covers, how long you get inside Pompeii and which houses the route names.

We read the 40 listings that clear 4.5 stars and 30 reviews, kept the seven with the strongest ratings, review counts and inclusions, then compared those seven by hours inside with that guide, what the route names, which ticket is in the price, the group cap and where you meet. Viator data from October 19, 2026.

Choose your walk by the group cap and the houses you want. These seven shared tours meet in Pompei and spend 2 to 2.5 hours on foot inside the site. Starting prices run from €29.50 to €180 per person. These operators advertise an archaeologist-led walk, and 135 Viator titles for Pompeii say the same thing. We compare what their listings say; we have not independently checked the qualifications of the guide assigned to your booking. What differs between the walks is the group cap, the hours and the houses the route names. Walks compared by guide language and gate instead are in Pompeii guided tours; the smallest groups, in small-group tours. Our inventory holds 135 listings for this search. Forty pass both of our review rules. We read the top 26 by our published score: seven shared walks are compared here, eight private alternatives sit below, and eleven were excluded; we have not assessed the other fourteen qualifying records.

Choose the Porta Marina walk for the most reviews. The Piazza Esedra walk meets beside Suisse Restaurant. Both start at €29.50 for 2 hours with an archaeologist and up to 20 people.

The six-person walk gives you 2.5 hours with six people at most; its price changed on October 1, 2026, so check it for your date. Its route names the House of Menander and House of the Vettii; house stops can change. Private walks and a winery outing sit separately below.

All seven shared walks include entry. Two include the Pompeii Express ticket, which the park's table prices at €20 for the ancient city, so the Villa of the Mysteries isn't on it; the others don't name the ticket. Your travel to the meeting point is extra.

What I'd do: I'd book the daytime Porta Marina walk for city entry and 2 hours with the guide.

Take it if you're happy with a general introduction. Choose named house stops elsewhere if those matter to you. Ask about booking children under 8.

The ticket doesn't name the Villa of the Mysteries, and the meeting address needs clarifying. What I'd do: get the house stops and meeting address before paying.

You get city entry and a shared group capped at 20. This route isn't recommended if you have mobility impairments.

The city ticket excludes the Villa of the Mysteries; mobility scooters aren't allowed. What I'd do: choose the daytime option for a first guided visit.

The smaller cap suits you if larger groups put you off. Other shared walks start lower if you're watching costs. Adult tour rates start at age 11.

The park list marks the Forum Granary temporarily not visible; Villa of the Mysteries access isn't specified. What I'd do: compare your party's total with a private walk.

  • Meet at Suisse Restaurant, Piazza Esedra
  • Up to 10 people

Pompeii tours with an archaeologist: which others did we compare?

These fit the brief but not the main list; each has its own page with our check of the listing.

What I'd do: I'd go without a guide if I wanted to choose each house and set my own pace.

What should I check before booking?

How much does a Pompeii tour with an archaeologist cost?

Allow €29.50 to €180 per adult for the shared walks. These are starting prices per person. The Porta Marina walk and Piazza Esedra walk both start at €29.50 on English Tour. The ten-person walk starts at €180 on English. Private walks priced per group sit separately below. What I'd do: compare the six-person walk if you want more time with fewer people sharing the guide.

Will my guide be an archaeologist?

Ask the operator who will lead your departure and what archaeology qualification they hold. A licensed guide with a background in archaeology and a named archaeologist are different descriptions, and we report the wording each listing uses. The Piazza Esedra walk includes a licensed guide with a background in archaeology; the six-person walk names an archaeologist in its own description; the larger group walk rests on its title, while its inclusions say only guide. What I'd do: send the operator one message and keep the answer with the booking.

How long will I spend inside Pompeii?

Plan on 2 hours with an archaeologist on most shared walks. The six-person walk lasts 2.5 hours on Semi Private Group Tour. Both figures cover the guided visit. That longer route names Menander and the Vettii. Its house stops can change with the archaeologist's duties. Praedia of Julia Felix has been closed since August 15, 2026. What I'd do: choose the extra time after agreeing replacement house stops.

Does the price include entry and the Villa of the Mysteries?

All seven shared options include Pompeii entry. The Porta Marina and Piazza Esedra walks include the Pompeii Express ticket, which the park’s table prices at €20 for the ancient city. The Villa of the Mysteries isn’t on it. Other included tickets don't specify villa access. The park's prices from January 12, 2026 put villa access on the €25 ticket. None of these shared routes names a guided villa visit. What I'd do: visit independently with the €25 ticket if the villa is my priority.

Do I need a car, or is hotel pickup included?

You don't need a car. All seven shared walks meet in Pompei without hotel pickup. If you're driving, use the A3 exit Pompei Scavi. For the six-person walk from Naples: 1. Take the Circumvesuviana toward Sorrento. 2. Get off at Pompei Villa dei Misteri. 3. Meet your guide at Bar Sgambati beside the station. What I'd do: take the train for this meeting point.

Can I bring children, and which age band should I book?

Enter every child's age before you compare totals. The daytime Porta Marina walk accepts infants aged 0 to 3 with an accompanying adult. Its child band covers 4 to 11; youth covers 12 to 17. On the ten-person walk, adult rates start at 11. Available rates for the larger shared walk start at 8; ask about younger children before booking. What I'd do: start with the daytime walk if you're bringing a baby.

How fit do I need to be?

Check the route's demands before booking. The fifteen-person walk calls for moderate fitness. The daytime Porta Marina walk isn't recommended for mobility impairments. It has steps and ramps, and mobility scooters aren't allowed. The sixteen-person walk isn't recommended for poor cardiovascular health. A private wheelchair route is available on request, with moderate fitness still required. What I'd do: agree that private route before booking if you need wheelchair access.

Will the tour run in rain, and can it be canceled?

Expect the daytime Porta Marina walk to run rain or shine. The sixteen-person walk can be canceled for bad weather or too few bookings. The Piazza Esedra walk needs at least six people. If too few book, you'll be offered an alternative or full refund. All seven shared walks allow a full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before departure. What I'd do: choose the daytime walk if ordinary rain wouldn't put you off.

What should I bring on the walk?

Bring ID and wear comfortable shoes. For the fifteen-person walk, your booking names must match your ID. Its voucher works only when you enter with the guide. On the daytime Porta Marina walk, bring ID or a passport for anyone under 18. You'll also need a small bottle of water. Add sunglasses and sunscreen in summer.

Which tour would you choose for a first visit?

Start with the daytime Porta Marina walk. English Tour gives you 2 hours with an archaeologist and city entry. The route names Menander and the House of the Faun. Groups can reach 20 people. The six-person walk gives you a smaller cap and 2.5 hours. Its house stops can change. What I'd do: choose Porta Marina for a first visit if a group of 20 suits you.

How early should I arrive, and can I enter if I'm late?

Arrive 10 minutes early for the fifteen-person walk and sixteen-person walk. Both meet at the Coffee Shop Vittoria, by the Porta Marina Inferiore entrance. The guides won't wait. You won't get a refund for arriving late or missing either tour. Their vouchers work only when you enter with the guide. What I'd do: choose your departure after checking that you can reach the meeting point early.
